How soon can you find out the sex of your baby?
Screening tests are used to find people at higher chance of a health problem. This means they can get earlier, potentially more effective treatment, or make informed decisions about their health. It can be helpful to imagine screening like putting people through a sieve.

It is usually done at weeks gestation. Most ultrasounds that are done after 10 weeks of pregnancy are performed abdominally. The sonographer will place some gel on your belly, and will rub a hand-held device probe across your belly in order to obtain a picture of your unborn baby. For an abdominal ultrasound during your first trimester , you may need to drink a few glasses of water. This is so your full bladder will push your uterus up out of your pelvis, allowing the baby to be seen clearly in the ultrasound images.
A 4D baby scan is an ultrasound scan, but unlike your conventional 2D black and white ultrasound scan which you may have seen at the hospital, the 4D scan produces life like images so that you can actually see what your baby looks like. You can have the 4D baby scan between the 22nd and 34th week of pregnancy although we suggest you try to book between your 28th week and your 32nd week. At six weeks the purpose of the early viability ultrasound scan is to confirm a fetal heartbeat and exclude an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes which can be dangerous for the mother. Most early viability scans can be performed by scanning through your tummy trans-abdominally when you are six weeks gestation or greater, however if the pregnancy is earlier than expected or the ultrasound picture is unclear we would recommend you have a trans-vaginal scan TV with your consent. When I’ve been pregnant in the past, I’ve always had an intense need to know the gender of my baby. Being a control freak and habitual planner, I hated not knowing and I was counting down the days until the week morphology scan. Want to join the family? There have been many studies on the accuracy of sex determination via ultrasound during the first trimester and there are some pretty high accuracy rates too. The angle of the nub in relation to the spine is a predictor for the baby’s sex.
